Carreras is committed to renewable energies through its collaboration with Sunswap. The logistics operator is launching a pilot project for all-electric refrigeration engines that offer autonomy on a single charge and, by combining batteries with integrated solar panels, manage to reduce CO2 emissions to zero. It is the first of its kind in Spain.
For the execution of these tests, the Sunswap Endurance refrigeration unit has been mounted on a semi-trailer from the manufacturer SOR, a specialist in refrigerated transport solutions. The high efficiency of its insulation and the construction quality of the SOR semi-trailer allow the performance of the electrical system to be optimised, guaranteeing the maintenance of the cold chain under the most demanding sustainability standards.
Sunswap, a leading manufacturer of 100% electric transport refrigeration units, through the Endurance unit, has created a system that reduces the operating costs of the fleet by using solar panels and batteries, taking advantage of the sun’s energy. In turn, this system is compatible with any trailer, which favors its integration. However, they arrive in Spain from the hand of the reference manufacturer, SOR IBERICA, providing the vehicle with one of the best insulation coefficients and a very profitable tare-payload binomial.
Among the multiple capabilities of this cooling system, its exact multi-temperature control stands out, having a large number of real-time data points that monitor all aspects of performance, among others.
For Carreras, this collaboration is a further step on the road to decarbonisation of the logistics and transport sector. “We are moving forward with efficient actions based on renewable energies, which are integrated into our strategic sustainability plan,” the logistics operator stresses.
Michael Lowe, CEO of Sunswap, said: “Carreras is a well-established Spanish logistics operator, and seeing Endurance in operation within its fleet is exactly what we developed it for. The cold chain in Spain faces the same commercial pressures as in any other market: costs, reliability and the need to move towards more sustainable technologies. At Sunswap, we help operators respond to those challenges with data and electric cooling. We look forward to seeing how Sunswap Endurance performs in the Racing fleet.”
Likewise, Carreras is working on the expansion and renewal of its fleet, training in efficient driving and commitment to the use of biofuels.
In 2025, Carreras was the first logistics operator to receive the Third Iberian Lean & Green Star from AECOC in recognition of its emission reduction in both Spain and Portugal.
Also in 2025, Carreras received the Responsible Charger Certificate (CEE), becoming the first European logistics operator to achieve it, for its commitment to invest in digitalisation, streamline operations by reducing loading and unloading times and advocate for the well-being of the driver.
